This Philadelphia bathroom was taken down to cement board and rebuilt with low-maintenance finishes.
What we did
- Hung cement board around the tub as a waterproof base for tile.
- Set a new tub and tiled the surround in large-format white porcelain with a herringbone niche.
- Installed a gray shaker vanity, framed mirror and brushed-nickel fixtures.
- Laid a light gray porcelain floor.

Why cement board matters
Tile is not waterproof on its own: water passes through grout over time. Cement board behind the tile will not rot or grow mold the way drywall does when it gets wet, which is why it goes around every tub and shower we tile. The herringbone niche gives the eye a focal point in a plain white surround and keeps bottles off the tub ledge. A gray shaker vanity hides everyday wear better than white.
