Planning a bathroom with large-format tile? Get a free estimate.
Large tiles only look good when they are flat, so this remodel was as much about prep as finish.
What we did
- Opened the walls around the tub for new plumbing rough-in.
- Set large-format tile on the walls and gray plank tile on the floor with a leveling system, for flat, even joints.
- Finished with a white vanity, an oval mirror and new lighting.

Why a leveling system
The bigger the tile, the more any dip in the wall or floor shows up as lippage, where one tile edge sits higher than the next. The orange clips in the photos are a tile leveling system: they hold neighbouring tiles flush while the thinset cures, and they are snapped off once it sets. It takes longer than setting tile by eye, but it is the difference between a floor you feel underfoot and one you do not.
