The old wood deck behind this townhouse was worn out, so it came down and a low-maintenance composite deck went in its place.
What we did
- Removed the old decking and railing down to the framing.
- Laid gray composite deck boards.
- Installed white rail posts with black metal balusters and a gate.
- Built a wood shadowbox privacy fence on the deck.

Why composite
Composite boards do not rot, splinter or need staining, so the deck keeps its color with only an occasional wash. Under trees like these, that matters: shade and fallen leaves keep wood decks damp, which is where rot starts. White rail posts with black metal balusters are open enough to keep the view of the yard, and a shadowbox privacy fence on the deck screens it from the neighbours.
