Summary:
Cabinet color sets the tone for the whole kitchen and is the hardest thing to change later. What white, cream, gray and two-tone cabinets each do well, with kitchens we finished recently.

Of all the decisions in a [kitchen remodel](/services/kitchen-remodeling), cabinet color is the one people agonize over most, and for good reason. Counters and backsplash can be redone; cabinets usually stay for decades. We finished four kitchens in the Philadelphia area over the past year, each with a different answer. Here is what each one does well.

## All white: bright and timeless

In a [white shaker kitchen](/projects/white-shaker-kitchen-with-gray-subway-tile-philadelphia-pa-qguysofu) we paired the cabinets with a gray glass subway tile backsplash and white quartz counters. White makes a smaller or darker kitchen feel bigger, works with almost any counter and floor, and rarely looks dated.

- **Good for:** small kitchens, rooms with little natural light, resale.
- **Watch for:** white shows scuffs on lower doors and around handles. A durable factory finish helps.

## Cream: white's warmer cousin

The [open kitchen with an island](/projects/open-kitchen-with-island-and-cream-shaker-cabinets-philadelphia-pa-r0k7apsf) used cream shaker cabinets with crown molding, a glass-front display cabinet and a built-in wine rack. Cream reads softer than bright white and sits nicely next to wood-look floors.

- **Good for:** traditional homes, open layouts where the kitchen faces the living room.
- **Watch for:** make sure the cream and the counter don't clash; pick them side by side.

## Two-tone: color without the risk

Our [two-tone kitchen](/projects/two-tone-kitchen-with-hexagon-tile-backsplash-philadelphia-pa-hvsht47s) has white upper cabinets and gray lowers, with a blue-gray hexagon backsplash, a marble-look quartz island and black hardware. White uppers keep the room bright at eye level, and darker lowers hide the scuffs that base cabinets collect from feet, mops and kids.

- **Good for:** families, open floor plans, anyone who wants color without a dark kitchen.
- **Watch for:** keep the rest simple. Two cabinet colors plus a bold backsplash is plenty.

## All gray: modern and forgiving

A [gray shaker galley kitchen](/projects/gray-shaker-galley-kitchen-philadelphia-pa-te2qlzwf) went gray top to bottom, with black pulls, a gray and white hexagon mosaic backsplash and white quartz counters. Gray hides wear well and feels current, and light counters and flooring keep it from getting heavy.

- **Good for:** galley and rental kitchens, homes with a modern look.
- **Watch for:** in a kitchen with little light, balance gray with light counters, a light backsplash and good lighting.

## A few rules that work in every kitchen

1. **Choose cabinets first,** then the counter, then the backsplash. Each one narrows the next.
2. **Look at samples in your own kitchen,** in daylight and at night. Colors shift a lot between the showroom and home.
3. **Let one thing be the star.** A bold backsplash or a busy marble-look counter, not both.
4. **Hardware is an easy accent.** Black pulls on white or gray cabinets add contrast that is cheap to change later.

## What affects the cost

Color itself rarely changes the price much. What does:

- **Number of cabinets** and whether the layout changes.
- **Two-tone or one color.** Two colors can mean two finish runs, but often no real difference.
- **Extras.** Crown molding, glass-front doors, a wine rack or an island add to the order.
- **Counters and backsplash.** Quartz, tile size and how much wall it covers.

## How long it takes

Cabinets set the kitchen's schedule: they are ordered after the design is final, and counters are measured only once the cabinets are installed. Backsplash tile goes in after the counters. Choose colors early, and the rest of the kitchen follows.

## Questions we hear

### Will white cabinets look dated?

White shaker has stayed popular for a long time. Hardware and backsplash are the easy parts to update later.

### Can I paint my existing cabinets instead?

If the boxes and doors are in good shape, painting can work. If they are worn or the layout is wrong, new cabinets are the better spend.

### What color works in a narrow rowhome kitchen?

Light colors, or two-tone with white uppers, keep a narrow room bright. More on rowhome kitchens in [remodeling a Philadelphia rowhome kitchen](/blog/remodeling-a-philadelphia-rowhome-kitchen).
