Summary:
Not every dated bathroom needs to go down to the studs. What a refresh can and can't fix, and the signs that only a full remodel will do.

Content:
A bathroom can look tired for two very different reasons. Sometimes it is only the finishes: an old vanity, dated fixtures, a worn floor. Other times the problem is behind the walls. In the Philadelphia rowhomes and Bucks County houses we work in, we see both every month. The first calls for a refresh; the second for a full [remodel](/services/bathroom-remodeling). Picking the right one is the difference between money well spent and money spent twice.

## What a refresh is

A refresh keeps the bones of the room: the tub, the wall tile around it and the plumbing locations stay. Everything you see and touch most gets replaced. On a [recent refresh in Philadelphia](/projects/bathroom-refresh-with-new-vanity-and-black-fixtures-philadelphia-pa-rouona9e) that meant:

- a new gray shaker vanity with a matte black faucet,
- a black-framed mirror and a matching light fixture,
- grab bars at the tub and new towel bars and shelves,
- a new light gray porcelain tile floor.

The room looks new from the doorway, it is faster to finish, and the household is back in the bathroom sooner.

A full remodel takes the room down to the studs or close to it. On [a full remodel we finished in January](/projects/bathroom-remodel-with-tiled-tub-surround-philadelphia-pa-jyrgkcji), the old surround came out, cement board went up around the tub as a waterproof base for tile, and the room was rebuilt with a new tub, a large-format white porcelain surround with a herringbone niche, a gray shaker vanity and a new tile floor. It is more work, but it fixes things a refresh can't reach.

- The wall tile around the tub is solid, with no cracks, hollow spots or loose pieces.
- The tub is in good shape, or can be refinished.
- No soft spots in the floor near the toilet or tub.
- No signs of leaks on the ceiling below.
- You are happy with the layout; you just don't like how it looks.

## Signs you need a full remodel

- **Soft or bouncy floor** near the tub or toilet: water has likely reached the subfloor.
- **Cracked or loose wall tile**, or grout that keeps failing in the same place.
- **Stains on the ceiling below** the bathroom.
- **Musty smell** that cleaning doesn't fix.
- **You want to change the layout**: move the toilet, swap the tub for a shower, add a double vanity.

A refresh on top of hidden water damage only covers it up for a while, and the new finishes come out again when the real repair happens.

## What affects the cost

- **How much comes out.** A refresh replaces what you see; a full remodel replaces what is behind it too.
- **Plumbing changes.** Keeping fixtures where they are is the biggest saving in either option.
- **Tile.** Wall tile around a tub is a large part of a full remodel's labor and materials.
- **Hidden damage.** A soft subfloor or an old leak turns a refresh into a remodel, which is why we check first.

## How long it takes

A refresh is usually a matter of days, because the tub, the tile and the plumbing stay. A full remodel is usually a matter of weeks: demolition, rough-in, waterproofing, tile and finish work, with inspections where the plumbing changes.

## Questions we hear

### Can you refresh the bathroom and keep the old tile?

Yes, if the tile is solid. New grout, caulk and fixtures can make sound tile look much better.

### Can I refresh now and remodel later?

You can, but spend the refresh money on things you would keep, like a vanity that fits the room.

### Will you tell me if a refresh is not enough?

Yes. If we see water damage, we say so before any work is quoted. For more on what turns up behind old tile, read [remodeling a bathroom in Northeast Philadelphia](/blog/bathroom-remodel-northeast-philadelphia).

## Still not sure?

Send us a few photos: the whole room from the door, the tub surround up close, and the floor around the toilet. We will tell you which one we would do and why.
